About Gold Leaf

T

he basic purpose of gilding is to give less valuable materials the appearance of solid gold (or silver, white-gold, cooper, etc.) Due to the cost and rarity of precious metals they have been produced in an extremely thin form so as to cover a large surface area with the smallest amount possible.

Gold leaf is produced by gold leaf manufactures, who transform solid pieces of gold the foil-like “leaves” used by gilders.

In the production of gold leaf silver, platinum and copper are added to the gold to form alloys of various colours. The required mixture of metals are then melted together at 1250° C and poured into a bar-form. After cooling this bar is pressed between metal rollers until a long ribbon of gold is produced. The “ribbon” is cut into squares which are then repeatedly hammered and re-cut until they reach a thickness of less than 0,00015 mm.

This method is also used to shape other metals into a thin leaf form; including aluminium and an alloy of copper and zinc, which are also known as imitation silver and imitation gold leaf.

Here are a few examples of the metals available in leaf-form:

Imitation Silver Leaf
Metal Leaf Copper

Metal Leaf Brass - Gold

Genuine Silver Leaf

White Gold Leaf - 12 carat

Light-Green Gold Leaf - 15.3 carat

Lemon Gold Leaf - 18 carat

Yellow Gold Leaf - 21 carat

Rosenoble Double Gold Leaf - 23.5 carat

Best Real Pure Double Gold Leaf - 24 carat

To conserve artworks on paper the climatic conditions surrounding them should be kept relatively stable:

  • direct sunlight or other strong lighting should be avoided
  • constant temperature between 18 und 22° Celsius
  • relative humidity of about 40 - 50%
